Calibration DVD
Use window test patterns only for CRTs and plasmas. For other types of displays you may use either.
Brightness, Contrast, and Sharpness
Brightness Test Pattern: There are five vertical stripes in the middle of the screen. Turn the brightness control on the display all the way down. Some or all of the stripes will disappear. Gradually turn the brightness control up again. The stripes that were before invisible will start to become visible again. When the darkest stripe on the far left just becomes visible, brightness is set correctly.
Contrast Test Pattern: Use this to set your peak output to the level recommended in the calibration guide. The test pattern is a 100% white screen with a just-below-white stripe on the left side of screen. Ensure that this stripe is just visible. If not, lower contrast until it is visible.
Sharpness Test Pattern: This test pattern is a single horizontal line and a single vertical line. Adjust the sharpness as high as possible while minimizing halos or ringing that you will see along the edge of the lines.
Grayscale
Use these test patterns to measure the ability of your display to track a neutral color of white from black all the way up to 100% white.
Color Gamut
Use these test patterns to measure you display's ability to reproduce the correct saturation, hue, and brightness relative to a target gamut. DVD and standard definition broadcasting use the SMPTE-C gamut. High definition broadcast and Blu-ray use the Rec. 709 gamut. All European sources use the EBU gamut.
White Balance
Use these test patterns to get a neutral shade of white at 80% and 20% stimulus. When finished, the grayscale should measure very well.
Gamma
Use these test patterns to get a linear gamma response within the recommended range.
